Throughout the 2017 AFL season, the AFLCA will shine a spotlight on the most outstanding players of each week.
Round 13 brought an end to the dreaded bye weeks, and saw five massive performances from St Kilda’s Seb Ross, Richmond’s Alex Rance, Brisbane’s Dayne Zorko, Carlton’s Bryce Gibbs and Melbourne’s Michael Hibberd earning maximum votes from the coaches.
West Coast’s Elliot Yeo has taken top spot in the 2017 Shadforth Financial Group AFLCA Champion Player of the Year Award after Round 13, with his two votes against Geelong enough to put him one vote ahead of Geelong’s Joel Selwood.
Ross was outstanding at St Kilda stayed in touch with the top-eight with a 17-point win over North Melbourne. The midfielder’s exceptional ball use was crucial for the Saints, as he amassed 32 disposals, six tackles and five clearances in a clearly best on ground display.
Rance solidified his standing as one of the best defenders in the AFL, providing a one-on-one master class in his match up with Lance Franklin, but it wasn’t enough to get Richmond over the line as they fell to Sydney by nine points. He had 21 disposals, 10 one-percenters and five marks to keep the Tigers in the contest late.
Zorko secured his second consecutive 10-vote performance, showing his class and tenacity despite Brisbane going down by 40 points to Port Adelaide. His 32 disposals, 12 tackles and two goals earned praise from both Ken Hinkley and Chris Fagan in what was a close contest or much of the game, with the Power pulling away from the Lions late in the match.
Gibbs had a game to remember as Carlton overcame the odds to down Gold Coast by 10 points. The star Blue filled the stat sheet, collecting 43 disposals, 10 tackles, eight marks and two goals to will Carlton to their fifth win of the season, leaving them just one game out of the top eight.
Hibberd used his dash across half-back to perfection as Melbourne dominated the reigning premier Western Bulldogs by 57 points. The former Bomber had 27 disposals and 11 marks in the demolition, which has seen the Demons rocket up to fifth spot on the ladder.
